Falles 2024

Falles (Valencian) / Fallas (Spanish) - pronounced "FI-es" / "FI-as"

A traditional celebration dating from the mid-18th century - originally and ostensibly in commemoration of Saint Joseph - held each year in Valencia during the first weeks of March. The term Falles refers to both the celebration and the monuments created during the celebration.

Each neighborhood of the city has an organized group of people, the Casal faller, that works all year long holding fundraising parties and dinners, usually featuring the famous dish, paella, a specialty of the region. Each casal faller produces a construction known as a falles.

On the final week of Falles, around midnight on March 19, all of the falles are burnt as huge bonfires. This is known as La Cremà (the Burning), the climax of the whole event, and the reason why the constructions are called falles ("torches").

Falles is entered on UNESCO's Representative List of the
Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Had anyone asked, which they did not, I would have urged that the doves
be kept as a permanent statue - or as least for as long as they survived the elements.
This would have been a wonderful, if not somewhat fleeting, centerpiece for the city.
But, Falles and La Cremà prevailed!
